ASTORIA:
True Life Tale of the Dangerous and Daring Enterprise beyond the Rocky Mountains
Jan. 10th:
I picked this one up for 99 cents on my Kindle last week. The Pacific Northwest has always held a fascination for me having grown up in Oregon. Since this was written by Washington Irving around 1835 I am going to call it my book that was written over 100 years ago.
Irving starts with the beginnings of the fur trade in Canada and then moves to the enterprises of John Jacob Astor. Quite interesting to read of the voyage from the East Coast to the West Coast to set up a trading post on the mouth of the Columbia River. It catches my fancy to read the language that was used then, very different ways of speaking. At the moment I have made it to Hawaii with these adventurers and am starting to get used to Hawaii being spelled "Owhyee" which is how Captain Ross spelled it in his journals. An interesting peak into Island life after reading of Magellan's voyage last year with all of the encounters they had that ended in tragedy, due in no small part to the European's actions. I keep waiting for everything to go south, but so far so good.
