Today’s Reading: Exodus 32-34
God’s presence in our lives is life-changing. Moses makes this statement in Exodus 33:16b, “For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.” That idea of being a people set apart is still on my mind. And we are not set apart because of who we are, or anything we have done, save for believing that Jesus Christ is who He says He is: the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Whenever I come to verses that speak very clearly about who God is I stop and take note. My main desire for reading through the Bible each year is to get to know God more. Here God tells Moses about Himself.
The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out,
“Yahweh! The Lord!
The God of compassion and mercy!
I am slow to anger
and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.
I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations.
I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin.
But I do not excuse the guilty.
I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren;
the entire family is affected--
even children in the third and fourth generations.” (Exodus 34:5-7)
“Yahweh! The Lord!

I like the first part, but the last line has always troubled me. We certainly see the truth in that through one man’s sin (Adam) all became sinners. Thank God that there is another man.
But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.
Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:15-19)
